Autumn Season
James Pyke's compilation of all the best dance sequences from the films, mainly from the RKO studios. Thanks also to Nick Wood and Nigel Hemming
One of our favourite films featuring the refurbishment and running of a tiny cinema. With Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford, Bernard Miles, Leslie Phillips, Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna. "Old films Mr Spenser - classics you might call them". bw
To acknowledge the passing of Enrico Morricone, the great composer of film music (Cinema Paradiso etc), here is another great Tornatore film featuring a pianist (played by Tim Roth) who is born on, and never leaves, a transatlantic liner. Featuring an incredible piano duel with Jelly Roll Morton, this is a terrific film. Peter Vaughan is in it too.
Benedict Cumberbatch as Greville Wynne, in the true story of a businessman who becomes caught up in a serious espionage drama.
Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine in an extraordinary tale of an anonymous naive gardener who becomes a White House adviser. Arguably Sellers' greatest role.
A very funny film featuring Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and a number of well-scrubbed dogs competing at the national dog show.
Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher as the icy Nurse Ratched, plus Danny de Vito and Christopher Lloyd. Concerned with mental health and questionable, institutional authority, this is a powerful drama but not without comedy.
Frances McDormand as Fern, who, following the failure of her business, embarks on a journey through the American west in her camper van, engaging with an itinerant community.
Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and Ansel Elgort in very entertaining musical car chase heist movie. 'Mozart in a Go Kart".
Anthony Hopkins, Anne Bancroft and Judi Dench in true 1950s bibliophile story featuring a New York writer and the manager of a London bookshop. Very good.
Splendid film with Matt Damon and Christian Bale in the Ford versus Ferrari motor sports battle and the crucial involvement of British driver/engineer, Ken Miles.
Touching tale wherein Timothy Spall as pensioner Tom makes the most of his bus pass by travelling from John O'Groats to Land's End. With Phyllis Logan. Excellent.
Roland Emmerich's atmospheric film of the Elizabethan theatre and the plausible theory that Edward de Vere wrote the plays attributed to William Shakespeare. With Rhys Ifans, Derek Jacobi and Vanessa Redgrave as Queen Elizabeth 1st.
True story of a 1979 plan by two families to escape from East to west Germany using a homemade hot air balloon and risking detection by the Stasi. Thrilling. German with subtitles.
Touching documentary about George Butterworth, an English composer of great promise who perished tragically in WW1. He visited Southwold in 1910 with Ralph Vaughan Williams on a mission collecting folk songs and dances, footage of which is included.
John Huston's classic film version of the Herman Melville novel with the great performance of Gregory Peck as Ahab. With james Robertson Justice and Orson Welles.
Robert Redford and Meryl Streep in the true story of Swedish writer Karen Blixen and her affinities with Africa and Denys Finch-Hatton. With Klaus Maria Blandayuer.
Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Stubby Kaye in the classic musical based on the Damon Runyon tale. Great film - Luck be a Lady Tonight etc.
Alastair Sim as the redeemed Christmas Carol miser - with Michael Hordern as Marley's Ghost plus Jack Warner and Kathleen Harrison. Brilliant! bw
